As of 2015, there are more than 900 million older people worldwide, according to WHO . These are people aged 60 years and older. Around 141 million, ie 1 in 6, older people experience some form of abuse: psychological, financial, neglect, physical, and sexual. Elder abuse is defined as actions or lack of appropriate action which can cause harm or distress to an older person. By 2050, the number of elderly worldwide will reach 2 billion.

The typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) that struck the Philippines on 8 November 2013 left about 7300 deaths according to this report by Inquirer.net . According to NDRRMC , 6,300 were reported dead as of 27 December 2013.
